Bad Gastein

The first ride in Bad Gastein went over 10-20cm large sharp rocks (sprängsten). Good thing was that we didn't fall and get hurt. The bad thing was that the brand new skies got badly damaged. A tough way to learn that there is not much snow now in Bad Gastein and you shouldn't ski in the low zone but take the lift down back from the mountain.

After the bad start, that was really the only ride we had time for when we arrived saturday afternoon (a "bonus ride") things has been great. Despite slight lack of snow in some areas we have had some great skiing both in pist and off pist, been enjoying a nice hotel with pool and sauna that serve a 5 course dinner every night and visited the famous thermal baths in Bad Gastein (Felsentherme). Kai have been riding on my back for the whole two first skiing days. Yesterday he had a day in the hotel with Ulf and today I have a day off playing with Kai. Here are some photos from the trip so far.

On the way now! The luggage trolley turned out to be fun to ride.

First day up on the top of the mountain. Partly sunny and a nice view. I was happily unaware that I was going to have un unconfortable ride over some rocks on the way down...

An 140 metre long rope bridge on the top of the mountain that I still have not dared to walk across. And I would be very surprised if I would before we leave Bad Gastein.

Sunday skiing in Bad Hofgastein and Schlossalm. Nice weather and ok pists in need of some more snow though. We could enjoy the longest run in european alps (if I understood that correctly) of over 10km!

Kai geared up for skiing.

A break during Monday skiing in Dorfgastein and Grossarl. Gulash soup has become the daily lunch food though served in slightly different shapes and taste, this time with a couple of hot dogs! Very tasty after a few hours skiing.

Waiting for the ski bus in Dorfgastein after a full day of skiing.

Tuesday skiing in Sportgastein. The snow kept falling during the day and we got the best skiing so far. The pists had more snow and as a result had been better prepared. I got myself quite a lot of more than decent off pist skiing with powder snow reaching the knees. At one time I just got stuck all of a sudden by snow reaching my waist :)

After the visit in the thermal baths Felsentherme. We thought it would be like a japanese hot spring resort but we found it to be a "slightly-less-than-body-temperature" spring resort featuring a variaty of indoor and outdoor pools with a temperature of 32 to 35 degrees celsius. Nevertheless very refreshing and nice where we liked the outdoor pool the most.

Kai and the horse having lunch in the play room in the hotel. The hotel we got upgraded to not only provide better rooms and food but also have more facilities like children play room and "children cinema".
